Zechariah Lloyd and Southern Groove Redemption are the kind of thing that could only happen in Oxford, MS. The combination of decades of experience across multiple styles of music make for a truly unique southern rock band.
SGR is Lloyd’s brain child. Having lived and played for years around Oxford, he assembled one of the more eclectic groups of musicians that the college town has seen in sometime. Jesse Martin (bass), Adam Davenport (trombone) and Daniel Hodges (saxophone) are all graduates of the Ole Miss music program and have been musicians for numerous local acts stretching back almost two decades. Jason Cain (guitar) is a Mississippi native who spent time in Nashville and Austin before returning to his home state with an itch to play, and along with Jason Box (drums), a multi-instrumentalist and long time Sultan of Swing, they provide a hard rock edge to the usual southern rock format.
The band plays numerous covers ranging from the Allman Brothers to Al Green to more recent fare such as Marcus King and Tyler Childers. They also keep a healthy supply of originals on tap, making it easy for SGR to tailor sets for a variety of settings.
“I’ve done everything from thrash metal to Texas country, and what I love about this band is that I have to an opportunity to use pretty much everything I’ve ever learned,” says Cain.
“Everybody in the band has chops, but what really come through is the maturity. Everyone is playing for the song in this band, not just the spotlight,” adds Davenport.
SGR is currently playing around North Mississippi and excited about reaching out and bringing their show to more audiences in the wider region. Whether it’s a roadhouse or a festival, SGR loves to play and loves entertaining an audience.
“It’s just a fun thing to do; if you love music, playing is as natural as breathing. But it’s a helluvalot more fun getting on stage and sharing it with other people who love it as much as you do,” says Hodges.
